SIGGreen Pre-AMCIS 2017 Workshop

Workshop Theme: Sustainability and Innovation: Building a Tradition of Research and Practice

SIGGreen is the AIS Special Interest Group on Green Information Systems. SIGGreen provides a platform for those in our discipline who are concerned with how information systems can help reduce human impact on the natural environment – one of the greatest challenge of your time. SIGGreen recognizes that the Information Systems (IS) discipline can have a central role in creating an ecologically sustainable society because of the field’s five decades of experience in designing, building, deploying, evaluating, managing, and studying information systems to resolve complex problems, SIGGreen’s positions are presented in its Statement on Environmental Change (https://siggreen.wikispaces.com/The+Statement-Manifesto).
The SIGGreen annual meeting and workshop will be held at AMCIS 2017 instead of ICIS because of travel logistics. The Pre-AMCIS 2017 workshop provides a forum for the breadth of sustainability research in IS and thus contributes to further developing this important IS research domain.
We invite papers employing a wide variety of methods. We welcome empirical (qualitative and quantitative), design-oriented and theory development research papers.
Interested authors submit extended abstracts (1-2 pages – see paper template for details) which will be peer-reviewed by at least two expert reviewers. Successful abstracts will be shared with other workshop participants. After the pre-AMCIS workshop, authors are invited to submit a final paper incorporating feedback. Workshop papers will be published as workshop proceedings on AIS Electronic Library (AISeL).
Information about the workshop will be updated at https://siggreen.wikispaces.com/Events

ECIS 2016 Track

Track: Sustainably Digital

Conference Location: Istanbul, Turkey

Track Description:

The digitization of private and professional life is both a challenge and an opportunity for supporting sustainable development, that is, “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Our Common Future –report, UN, 1987). Sustainability can be investigated from diverse perspectives, typically focusing on environmental, economic, and social aspects (Elkington 1997; Elliot 2011; Melville 2010).

Through digitization, information systems stand to play a pivotal role in achieving strategic sustainability objectives. First, information systems can help individuals, groups, and firms choose sustainable alternatives that reduce waste and use of energy and thus contribute to environmental and economic sustainability. Second, information systems have always aimed to contribute to economic sustainability, for instance, through generating efficiencies from management information systems, transaction processing systems, or data management systems. Third, information systems can form the global gateway to sustainability through sensor networks, business information systems, or data management, amongst others. Importantly, the three dimensions are closely intertwined, and the topic of sustainability is now typically addressed from a view of a single bounded ecosystem that includes social, political, and economic structures (Elliot 2011).

The aim of this track is to advance the discussion on the role and relevance of information systems in the context of sustainability. It intends to provide thought leaders with a forum that accounts for the breadth of sustainability research in the information systems discipline in terms of environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Potential topics range from the design of systems and digital services for sustainability to the application of existing theories on change at the individual, group, organizational, and societal levels, as well as the development of new theory. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • IT-enabled organizational sustainability transformation
  • Use of information systems to design and implement more sustainable business processes
  • Design of sustainable value chains
  • Information Systems for lower carbon emissions
  • Energy informatics
  • The role of information systems in energy policy
  • Information systems for raising environmental awareness
  • Green awareness and communication for formulating organizational strategy
  • Information systems for the encouragement of green choices by consumers
  • Sustainable everyday life practices through information systems
  • Recycling of electronic devices
  • Sustainable consuming through direct access to product information

We invite rigorous and relevant empirical studies employing a wide variety of methods. We also welcome conceptual papers.

This track is supported by the Special Interest Group for Green Information Systems (SIGGreen) of the Association for Information Systems.

2013

2013 Program and Pre-ICIS Workshop

AMCIS 2013 Track Description

TEACHING AN IS SEMINAR IN WINTER TERM?

Connect your IS seminar to a global virtual seminar, having your students cooperating on challenging IS topics with students around the globe.

Next course to join: Winter term 2013/2014, October 2013 to January 2014

Sign up until: September 15 2013

ORGANIZATION OF THE SEMINAR

The seminar connects students from different IS Schools worldwide to work together on joint seminar papers using a virtual collaboration environment. This addresses two major learning experiences:

1) Get trained in virtual intercultural communication: Every student team is set up internationally, in that there are no two team members from the same university; they are all split up over multiple groups. Students use collaboration tools free of their choice to accomplish a joint seminar work over the semester.

2) Study exciting IS research topics: This year's topic is envisioning future forms of customer-oriented communication and collaboration. The seminar is integrated with the 2014 Hilti IT Innovation Competition and students can win trips to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Tulsa Oklahoma (USA) or Schaan (Liechtenstein).

FACTS
- Registration open till: September 15 2013
- Student's profile: Master students in IS and related studies
- Term: Winter 2013/2014; September/October 2013 to January/February 2014
